Wine Package by Vintage Berkeley & Solano Cellars

2004 Niepoort "Vertente", Douro, Portugal
Portugal’s winemaking scene is no longer one-dimensional. Non-fortified table wines from the Douro are emerging as real players, competing with Bordeaux’s for structure, California reds for ripeness and demonstrating the spicy flair of Rioja. Niepoort’s Vertente is one of those now you see it, now you don’t wines – there’s so little imported that we scrambled to snatch it up. Kirsch, smoke, cream and blueberry billow out of the glass. This wine has a beautiful future ahead of it, but could do dangerous things now with a rack of lamb or steak dinner.

2005 Selene Sauvignon Blanc, Carneros, California
Although winemaker Mia Klein is a sought-after consultant to wineries like Toni Soter or Spottswoode, it’s Selene that she coins her "personal expression". Here, Klein creates a layered Sauvignon Blanc of the musque clone that mixes cream with lime, minerality and honeydew. Magnificently crafted and perfect with fresh goat cheese.

2005 Martin Alfaro Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains, CA
We love the wines of the Alfaro Family – so much so that we’ve become tireless evangelists of their well-priced and freaky good wines. Foggy mountain weather and exceptionally low-yields (all of 95 cases) in ’05 produced this powerful and sexy Pinot redolent of black cherries, purple flowers, cola and camp smoke. We liked this wine so much that we secured over a quarter of the total production.

2004 Germano-Ettore Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy
Sergio Ettore recently visited our wine bar and told us the story of this tasty daily drinker (you gotta have something while the Barolo is taking 20 years to mature). The youngest vines from the white limestone and marl rocks produce fresh, fruit driven and floral wines with less tannin than the big boys. It smells of roses and flowers mixed with cherry juice. Pretty enticing. It’s soft, round and has some light tarry tannins that keep things interesting and prolong the finish. Great with lighter pasta dishes.
