In this age of "no child left behind" funding for arts and music in the schools has been drastically cut. For many students these programs provide a much-needed escape from the rest of their lives. At El Dorado Elementary, which serves the areas around the Sunnydale housing projects, we are trying to expose students to a myriad of artistic genres.
The after-school program serves over one third of the school population and is the only place these student can experience classes in music, dance, theater, arts and environmental education. For the 2007-2008 school year we are planning to offer hip-hop (taught by Sisterz of the Underground), Planet Art, Tree Frog Treks, drumming, and digital photography.
None of these classes were available this year, partially because our after-school funding has been at an all time low. All proceeds from this event will go directly into funding these programs.
